The voice and music of Umberto Tozzi brings me back memories of a very distant but cherished childhood. My older sister used to love this man when we were kids and she would listen to him constantly. The sound of Tozzi's distinctive, dramatic vocals blasting from our stereo system was a constant in our everyday life throughout a brief period in the mid 1980's. The songs that I remember the most and have become fond of are "Ti Amo" (included here), "Gloria" (included here) and "Mama Marema - Verano del 56" (not included here). This CD was purchased as a gift and having listened to it recently, I can understand why those hopeless romantics like my older sister would love these melodic, romantic pop tunes. Some of the music, arrangements sound a bit dated, actually they sound really dated but these songs are several decades old, mostly from the 70's and 80's and there is no denying Tozzi had a commanding way of singing. All of the songs showcased here are in Italian but even those who do not understand the language can appreciate the sentiments expressed by the emotional vocals. "Ti Amo" retains its oozing sentimentality and is so richly romantic, it may just turn those unsuspecting listeners to mush. The tune is catchy but I must state Tozzi's vocals is the main highlight here. "Gloria" is another well known song made famous in North America by the late Laura Branigan (who also covered "Ti Amo"). Although I love her version, Tozzi's rendition is a tough act to follow. The opener, "Lo Camminerò" is another highlight, showcasing a raspier side to Tozzi's vocals. Another great song is the catchy "Tu". This must have been a favorite of my sister's because she played this one constantly and I can understand why, the melody is great and Tozzi's vocals are superb. Too bad this collection does not include what is probably my favorite of his, "Mama Marema". I do not think this was ever a single release which is why it is not included here but it is such a great tune that I urge those interested to check it out on YouTube.Overall, this is a good selection of songs, showcasing the career of the popular, Italian singer. Get it.
