This is an interesting collection of naturalist short stories all treating the Franco-Prussian War in individual ways. Most readers are familiar with Maupassant's Boule de Suif (which is probably the star of the colleciton) and possibly Zola's L'Attaque du Moulin, but the other stories are interesting from a cultural and social perspective, especially Hennique's chilling l'Affaire du Grand Sept which explores the violence of the French military from a gendered perspective. It's interesting to see a different perspective on the 1870 war coming out of France only ten years after the event. The book is a quick read, but thought provoking on a variety of levels.
